At July 2026, I am very delinquent in sharing a means of creating straight smallest-possible gaps around an attic ladder door.
Isn't this pretty? This photo is dated 12/3/2021. Gaps are easily set to 1/8" using a 1/8" drill bit as the gage.
This photo is dated 7/24/2019, gaps set where the drywall cut follows precisely the outside edge of the ladder frame, and grout is tapered from the drywall edge to the inside edge of the ladder frame. Errors in the drywall cut and hacked shapes for sure with lath and plaster, led to time-consuming artistry demands not always met with perfection.

Either method has served attic ladder installation with air-sealed space between the ladder frame and its rough frame, with no need of "trim" pieces upon the ceiling to only hide framing gaps. Trim pieces usually defy a fire-safe installation, only hiding large leakage paths into the attic that quickly transmit fire.
The much-prettier method with steel edges accommodates ceiling defects about the attic ladder that are common with lath and plaster breakage, achieving patched-ceiling perfection with much less effort. With this method too, the ladder is less bonded-in-place. Want to be able to remove and replace a broken attic ladder without sawing-out bond material. Just pull a few screws and lift the closed ladder into the attic.
